The winners of the 2023 Olivier Awards, which celebrates the best of London theater, were announced on Saturday night in a ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall. The awards, which were suspended in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, were back with a bang this year, featuring a number of star-studded performances and memorable moments.

The big winner of the night was “The Inheritance,” a two-part play by Matthew Lopez that explores the lives of gay men in New York City a generation after the AIDS crisis. The play won five awards, including best new play, best director (Stephen Daldry), best actor in a supporting role (Samuel H. Levine), best lighting design (Jon Clark) and best sound design (Paul Arditti).
Other notable winners included “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” which won best revival; “Hairspray,” which won best musical revival; and “The Ocean at the End of the Lane,” which won best new musical.
Several big names in theater and film were also recognized, including Imelda Staunton, who won best actress in a musical for her role in “Gypsy,” and Ralph Fiennes, who won best actor for his performance in “The Master Builder.”
The ceremony also featured a tribute to Stephen Sondheim, the legendary composer and lyricist who passed away in November 2021. The tribute featured performances by a number of Broadway and West End stars, including Bernadette Peters, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Patti LuPone.
Overall, the Olivier Awards were a celebration of the resilience and creativity of London theater, which has faced significant challenges over the past two years due to the pandemic.
